'Delima Raja Urat' (L) and 'Cao Gen Bai Lin Wan' are illegal health products that contain substances which cause adverse side effects.

SINGAPORE: Two illegal health products claiming to relieve pain have been found to contain substances that will cause adverse side effects.

The two products are "Delima Raja Urat", a Malay Jamu medicine, and Chinese product "Cao Gen Bai Lin Wan".

"Delima Raja Urat" claims to treat back and muscle pain, as well as gout, while "Cao Gen Bai Lin Wan" claims to improve blood circulation and relieve pain.

The Health Sciences Authority (HSA) said both contain potent drugs that could lead to muscle bone damage and mental disorders.

These drugs are dexamathasone, an anti-inflammatory drug; chlorpheniramine and pheniramine, both antihistamines to treat allergies; and sibutramine, an appetite suppressant.

Other possible side effects include vision problems, gastro-intestinal problems and urinary retention.

One patient took "Delima Raja Urat" for a month and saw symptoms of raised blood sugar level. This later developed into diabetes.

Another who took the Chinese medicinal product for two months experienced increased blood pressure and rapid weight gain.

Both of them had bought the products overseas as they are not sold in Singapore.

HSA advises those who have bought these products not to consume them.

  1. Kementerian Kesihatan menasihatkan orang ramai agar tidak membeli atau menggunakan produk tradisional 'Delima Raja Urat' kerana didapati mengandungi racun berbahaya iaitu dexamethasone.

Pengarah Kanan Perkhidmatan Farmasi Kementerian Kesihatan Datuk Eisah A Rahman berkata berdasarkan label pada produk, ia diguna untuk sakit urat, sakit pinggang, lenguh sendir tulang, sakit lutut, kebas kaki tangan, gout, lemah tenaga dan letih lesu.

Namun, beliau berkata hasil ujian Pusat Pemonitoran Kesan Advers Ubat Kebangsaan, Biro Pengawalan Farmaseutikal Kebangsaan (BPFK) mendapati produk itu mengandungi dexamethasone iaitu sejenis kortikosteroid yang dikawal di bawah Akta Racun 1952.
